Module A: The Begining for New Volunteers

The Beginning is required for Volunteer Tax Counselors new to Tax- Aide.  It gives an introduction to Federal and State income tax preparation including the Tax Slayer software.  It covers the organization and resources of the program and an in depth study of filing status and exemptions.

Please note: Students will be given paper copies of the 4012, 6674 and the NTTC workbook at this session.

Module B: Basic Income

The Basic Income Module covers the determination and reporting of basic types of income and their Tax-Aide Scope limitations. Wages, scholarship income, interest and dividends, unemployment, and several other basic income types will be explored.

Module C: Retirement Income

The Retirement Income module covers how to identify retirement income and how to properly enter the data into the TaxSlayer software. The module will also explore how to calculate the taxable portions of different types of retirement income using various tax tools.

Module D: Self-Employment Income

The Self-Employment Module covers income and expenses related to self-employed individuals. The module also addresses completion of a Schedule C and Tax-Aide Scope issues related to Self Employment income.

Module E: Capital Gains

The Capital Gains module explores the tax implications of sales of various capital assets. The module will cover how to determine a holding period, calculating a taxable gain or deductible loss, the sale of a home, as well as AARP scope limitations. In addition, how to correctly enter Capital Gains into TaxSlayer will be demonstrated.

Module F: Adjustments and Deductions

The Adjustments and Deductions Module covers adjustments lowering gross income to determine AGI (adjusted gross income) and Deductions, which, along with exemptions, are subtracted from AGI to create Taxable Income.  The focus of the Deduction section is to determine when and what Itemized Deductions are advantageous to the taxpayer.

Module G: The Affordable Care Act

The Affordable Care Act module will explain various aspects of the ACA and the tax return implications. The module will explore key forms, Minimum Essential Coverage, Premium Tax Credits, and the Shared Responsibility Payment.  The module will also look at possible exemptions from the requirement to have health care coverage.

Module H: Credits

The Credits Module covers the various Non-Refundable and Refundable Credits.  The focus is upon Education Benefits and Earned Income Credits as well as how to help taxpayers become aware of credits they may be eligible for.

Module I: Advanced Topics

The Advanced Topics module will cover various aspects of the tax code. The module will look at ITIN’s, basic rental income, Health Savings Account contributions and distributions, estimated taxes, the First Time Homebuyer Credit Repayment, and amended returns.
