Volunteer Roles

Volunteers are critical to the success of free tax preparation in your community. We hope you will join us.  There are 4 ways that volunteers assist with free tax preparation.

Tax Counselor

Tax Counselors play a central role in the services we provide our clients. As a Tax Counselor, you can expect to sit with a taxpayer and prepare a tax return. Don’t worry, no experience is needed! Our free, comprehensive training will teach you all you need to help our clients. All we ask is that you bring a willingness to learn.

Comfort with technology is important as all returns are prepared on the computer. Access to high-speed internet is needed for training. You will learn our software in your training sessions.

Another trait of a great volunteer is attention to detail. Taxes can get complex. We have a commitment to high quality returns, which means a personal desire to get it right. We provide a no pressure environment, and you will have plenty of time and support. In addition, your fellow volunteers will work with you to provide a quality review check of your returns.

People skills are also important. You will work with a variety of people in your experience as a volunteer. The ability to communicate, empathize, and understand your clients’ needs is vital.

Our volunteering is seasonal. Tax training begins with orientation in November. Training takes place in December and January. Tax season starts on February 1 and runs through April 15th. Visit Volunteer Training to learn more.

Client Facilitator

A key position at the tax site, Client Facilitators welcome taxpayers and help them with their intake paperwork.  You maintain the schedule and refer taxpayers to the next available Tax Counselor.  You are the first impression at the tax site and help put taxpayers at ease.

Interpreter

As an Interpreter you make is possible for our taxpayers who prefer to speak in another language to get their taxes done in a comfortable environment.  You translate the discussion that occurs between taxpayers and Tax Counselors. You do not need any previous translation experience, just a friendly demeanor and desire to help.  Currently we need Spanish-speaking volunteers.

Administrative

Recruiting and training hundreds of volunteers requires a great deal of administrative support.  With a small staff of four, we cannot do it all. We need your help with data entry, phone calls and other office responsibilities.
