ITIN Application & Renewal

What is an ITIN?

An ITIN is an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number only available for certain nonresident and resident aliens, their spouses, and dependents who cannot get a Social Security Number (SSN)

IRS issues ITINs to help individuals comply with U.S. tax laws and to provide a means to efficiently process and account for tax returns, credits, and payments.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I QUALIFY?

  • You are a resident alien of the United States (Have lived 183+ days in the US) that does not qualify for a Social Security Number and have a source of income to declare on a tax return.
  • You are the parents of a resident alien from Canada or Mexico that need to be claimed as dependents.
  • Dependents who are the taxpayer’s son or daughter and live in the U.S.
  • Spouse that does not qualify for a Social Security Number.

DOCUMENTS FOR AN ITIN APPLICATION

  • Passport (stand-alone document) *
  • U.S. driver’s license
  • State Identification Card
  • Civil birth certificate (required for dependents under 18 years of age)
  • Consular Identification Card

*A passport is the only document that proves both identity and foreign status.  For dependents, the passport must have a date of entry to be a stand-alone document, unless the dependent is from Canada or Mexico, or a dependent of U.S. military personnel stationed overseas.  If a passport is not submitted, a combination of two or more documents must be submitted to meet the document requirements.
