Word of mouth is the most common way CASH volunteers learn about our program and get involved. That’s why we want to make it easier for you to help spread the word!
Our hope is this information and these resources will make you feel confident talking about volunteering with CASH Oregon to friends and family who may want to get involved too.
Recruitment Talking Points
What does CASH do?
- Provide free, high-quality tax preparation and ITIN assistance to lower-income families and individuals
- Work with community partners to conduct tax education workshops
- Team of over 350 IRS-certified volunteers
- 18 tax sites throughout the Portland Metro area + a Mobile Tax Site that travels to different community locations throughout the tax season
- We’ve helped almost 9000 families get the refunds and credits they deserve this year so far!
What roles are available?
- Tax Preparer: Prepares and completes tax returns, answers tax questions Requires approximately 30-40 hrs of self-paced training
- Client Facilitator: First point of contact at a tax site; checks in taxpayers for appointments and helps clients make appointments by phone Requires approximately 5-10 hours of self-paced training
- Interpreter: Helps translate for taxpayers who are not proficient in English Spanish highest need, but all language skills are welcome Requires approximately 5-10 hours of self-paced training
What if you’ve never done taxes before?
- No experience is needed!
- Most of our volunteers are NOT tax pros
- Training is designed to meet all experience levels
- You’ll shadow seasoned volunteers during your first shifts to build confidence before working solo
- Always someone around to ask for help!
What does training look like?
- Free, Virtual, self-paced training
- most complete the initial training in 30–40 hours (expedited tracks for those with tax experience)
- Not just tax law lectures, watching mock interviews to get a sense of what a tax prep appointment looks like, while learning tax concepts and how to use the tax software
- 2-3 open book IRS certification exams to pass depending on role
When can you start?
- Training for peak season (late January - mid-April) takes place November- early January
- Training materials are available almost all year round for self-paced learning
Where can you volunteer?
- During Peak Season (late January-mid-April), there are 18+ tax sites throughout the Portland Metro area
- Many are open on evenings and/or weekends to accommodate busy schedules
- Pick the location and shift that works best for you!
