How to Claim Past Tax Refunds

You Can Still Claim Refunds from the Past 3 Years — Here’s How!

Many people don’t realize you can file tax returns for past years to claim refunds—if you missed them, there’s still time! The IRS allows you to file returns to get refunds for up to three years after the original tax filing deadline. For example, before April 15th 2026 you could have filed and received refunds for tax year 2024, 2023, 2022. Looking ahead taxpayers can file for 2025, 2024, and 2023 until April 15th 2027.

This is especially important for families with kids, as refundable credits like the Child Tax Credit, Earned Income Tax Credit, and Oregon Kids Credit could mean bigger refunds for your household.

If you need help catching up on past returns, our free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites are here for you. Visit the “Get Tax Help” section of the CASH Oregon’s website to find a free tax prep site near you. Additionally you can find other partner VITA sites through the IRS VITA locator and claim every refund you deserve. Learn more about the IRS three-year refund rule here.
